The Mukesh Patel Scholarship

National law firm has established a scholarship for law students in memory of Mukesh Patel, former Managing Partner of Freeths' Leicester Office. 

The Mukesh Patel Scholarship will provide local undergraduate law students with award of £8,000 (£4,000 per year from second year), with a focus on the socio-economic backgrounds of students who want to pursue a career in Commercial Law. This award also includes a work experience opportunity with Freeths.

Freeths launched the scheme to honour Mukesh's legacy and commitment to diversity and equality within the legal profession and to the local business community.

A respected and popular member of both Freeths and the local community. Mukesh, who was born and went to school in Leicester, led the firm's Dispute Resolution team in Leicester and subsequenlty became Managing Partner of the Leicester office in 2014.

  1. Eligibility Criteria

    To be eligible, students must:
    1. Be enrolled in the current academic year on the undergraduate Law LLB (hons) degree and be in their second year of study (not distance learning)
    2. Be a home/fee paying student — have a UK Student Support Number (English, Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish students) must reside in the United Kingdom before and during the course of study
    3. Have been income assessed by the University’s finance department and be in receipt of a student loan
    4. Be able to demonstrate a financial need — household income must indicate that students are eligible for means-tested support
    5. Be a self-funding student, the course of study must not be externally funded
    6. Hold no other form of donor or university funded scholarship
    7. Must meet the entry requirements for their chosen course
  2. Terms and conditions

    1. This scholarship is not transferrable
    2. The data on your student finance record must meet the award edibility criteria. In order to be able to be fully assessed against the criteria you must:
      1. Have completed your student finance application and it must have been assessed and finalised by your relevant UK student finance authority
      2. Have signed and returned your student declaration form to the SLC
      3. Ensure your relevant UK student finance authority record is available to 91Ó°ÊÓ. Therefore, you must have given permission for your information to be shared with the university
      4. Ensure that your parents/sponsors have given student finance their permission for their information to be shared with 91Ó°ÊÓ
    3. Student records must include bank details in order for the scholarship to be paid, as the scholarship is paid directly into a student's bank account by 91Ó°ÊÓ. If your student record is not in a position for payment to be made, your payment will be delayed or not made at all
    4. The scholarship will be paid in instalments in line with 91Ó°ÊÓ’s normal Bursary and Scholarship payment schedule, which is once per term
    5. Any scholarship payments made by 91Ó°ÊÓ after a student has interrupted their studies or withdrawn from the university will normally be recovered from the student
    6. Any scholarship payment made by 91Ó°ÊÓ in error OR paid as a result of false information submitted will normally be recovered from the student
    7. If a payment is not received, it is the responsibility of the student to urgently contact the Scholarships Team at 91Ó°ÊÓ, so that the non-payment can be investigated

    Applications for 2025/26 are now open and close at 5pm on Friday 21 March.
