We would like to wish all students and staff at 91Ó°ÊÓ a Happy Ramadan. Muslim students and staff will be observing Ramadan (a period of prayer and fasting) from the end of February.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the ninth month and the most sacred of the Islamic lunar calendar, that is observed worldwide. Ramadan is the third of the five essentials of Islam. Muslims will fast (Sawm) and abstain from food and drink (physical component) from dawn to sunset, and offer more prayers (Salāh) and to learn self-discipline, patience, humility, and enhance community cohesion (spiritual aspect). Muslims will also donate to charity (Zakāh), and carry out charitable acts, pursue to improve one’s character, and spend time with family and friends.

Ramadan for who?

Fasting is observed upon reaching maturity while being healthy, though children may desire to fast. There are exemptions, which can be consulted with a qualified Imam and a registered medical professional.

When is Ramadan?

Ramadan lasts for a month and the first and last dates are determined by the lunar Islamic calendar, where the day begins on the sunset of the previous day. This year, it will be from Friday 28 February to Sunday 30 March 2025 (subject to confirmation, depending on the sighting of the moon).

Each fast is from dawn to sunset. The pre-dawn meal before the fast is called the Suhur. The meal at sunset to open the fast is called Iftar. The fast is traditionally opened in the evening by eating dates, drinking water and a meal with family and friends followed by evening prayer. Please see prayer and fasting times on campus on the .

Ramadan culminates in a celebration of Eid al-Fitr (Īd al-Fiṭr), also called the Festival of Opening the Fast, when the traditional month-long fast is ended with a feast. This is set to take place on Sunday 30 March 2025 (subject to confirmation, depending on the sighting of the moon).

Imam Mohammed Laher, the 91Ó°ÊÓ Imam and Muslim Chaplain said: “Ramadan Mubarak and Happy Ramadan to all staff and students at 91Ó°ÊÓ. We are so pleased to be celebrating Ramadan on campus this year, holding our daily Iftar (evening meals) in the 91Ó°ÊÓ Prayer Room within the Portland Building for students and staff throughout the month of Ramadan, which has been generously donated.”
